Bob Haase: The Selection, Procurement, and Characteristics of Fly Tying Materials
What do you look for when you purchase fly tying materials? What makes one bucktail, saddle, or piece of elk hair better than the others on the peg in a fly shop, or online? What makes one hook, or brand of thread better or more appropriate for the fly you are tying? How are saddle hackle and neck hackle graded and what are the things to look for when selecting good dry fly hackle?
Tying flies is a lot easier when you have the best quality materials to work with, but it doesn’t have to cost you more. If there are five grizzly dry fly hackles available, and they are all the same price, what makes one better than the other?
Bob Haase will discuss the characteristics of the major fly tying materials and explain how to select the best materials for the flies you are tying. If you don’t tie, you may want to attend anyway, as he will also discuss things to consider when purchasing flies at a fly shop, and things you can do to the flies you buy to make them fish better.
Why would you rib a dry fly with wire, or use dubbing that absorbs water readily on a dry fly? Bob will also discuss the use or application of the materials where this might even make sense. Bring your tying questions and Bob will try to answer them for you.
