November 2021 Chapter Meeting

November 18, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

FVTU: Virtual Chapter Meeting

November 18th, 2021

Guest Speaker: Matt Mitro, Coldwater Research Scientist

Matt is currently involved with a study of how beavers influence coldwater stream habitat and trout populations in Wisconsin. Beaver colonization and dam building may influence trout populations and habitat in low-gradient streams of the Upper Midwest, but scientific data are lacking. This study examines the way beavers affect coldwater streams and trout populations in ecoregions and beaver management zones across Wisconsin. Results of this study will better inform beaver and trout management strategies.

Matt will also do a short talk about how trout density affects the size of the fish. Land use changes and stream habitat projects since the mid-20th century have led to abundant Brown Trout Salmo trutta populations in many Wisconsin streams. Perceptions of poor growth in high density trout populations have raised the question of whether increased harvest can improve trout growth. We reduced Brown Trout density in 2013 and 2014 in a 400-m experimental site in a high density (2,200 trout/km) stream to evaluate growth response. Annual Brown Trout survival ranged from 0.27 to 0.58. Trout density decreased at experimental and control sites from 2013 to 2014-2015 and increased at all sites in 2016-2017, but not to 2013 levels. Relative body condition showed some improvement in the experimental site relative to one control site only in 2014. Relative body condition for all sites combined increased significantly from 2013 to 2014-2015 and decreased in 2016-2017. Mean instantaneous rates of growth for 200─299-mm Brown Trout were also significantly different among years but not among experiment and control sites. The data suggest body condition and growth can improve in response to a decrease in density, but annual variability in trout population dynamics is likely to preclude persistently-high densities and may negate the need for increasing harvest to improve growth.
